Lohagad Fort, The Iron Fort of India

Lohagad Fort Overview :

Talking of architectural marvels, India is on top of charts. In fact, India boasts of having more than 35 sites that have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Reason being, India’s history has been glorified with great rulers and builders. They built forts and castles as a matter of pride, whereas there were also rulers, who built kingdoms to glorify themselves. No matter what reasons prevailed at those times, India definitely has a rich legacy, rich enough to show off.

In reference to the above context, Lohagad Fort is once such place. The fort lives up to its name, which actually translates into iron fort. It is one of the must-visit places in Maharashtra. Its rich history and architectural brilliance makes it a good option for a quick getaway from the regular din of the city.

Situated in Lonavala region, Lohagad Fort divides the basins of Indrayani and Pavna. You can access the fort from any of its four entrances―Hanuman Darwaja, Ganesh Darwaja, Maha Darwaja and Narayan Darwaja.

Situated at the height of 3400 feet, Lohagad Fort is a UNESCO world heritage site and formidable fort about 52 kilometres away from Pune.

Perched atop an impressive hill near Malavali, this destination is the perfect amalgam of ancient architecture and natural beauty. Lohagad Fort was built in the 18th century and is an ideal destination for trekking and nature lovers, especially from Pune and Mumbai. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj used to keep his treasury in this fort.

The trek to the fort is an easy one and perfect for the first-timers, making it a favourite haunt of hiking enthusiasts. In addition to its thrilling trek route, Lohagad Fort in itself is a massive structure that was once under the control of the mighty Maratha Empire and is connected to its twin Visapur Fort as well. Until a few years back, the base of the fort was quite far from the last point connected via road, but now a proper road has been built to the base of the fort, due to which a lot of people visit Lohagad during monsoon weekends, making it quite crowded. Whether you visit this destination for its lush green beauty, adventurous trekking route, panoramic views or illustrious history, Lohagad Fort is certainly worthy of a visit.

History of Lohagad Fort :

It is said that the fort was built by Guru Govind Singh to serve as a prison. The history of this fort is then also associated with the great Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji; people also believe that several dynasties, such as Rashtrakutas, Nizamshahis, Yadavas, Chalukyas, Mughals, Bahamanis, Satavahanas, have used this fort. These instances, therefore, make this fort a prominent part of Maharashtra’s history.

Architecture of Lohagad Fort :

Perched at 3400 ft, Lohagad Fort is a vast fort spread far wide. It constitutes of four entrances namely Ganesh Darwaja, Narayan Darwaja, Hanuma Darwaja and Maha Darwaja from the nearby village. One can see some beautiful sculptures carved out on the Maha Darwaja. It's most famous spot is Vinchu Kata, a range of hills that looks like Capricorn.

Lohagad Fort Trek :

Nestled in the bosom of gently rolling hills, there is more than one route to reach the Lohagad Fort via trekking. This multi-access fort is a perfect location for trekking. So if you are game for some fun, this fort will justify your attention. For beginners, trekking to this place will be a great choice.

The fastest and easiest route is driving up to the base village of Lohagadwadi, and then simply walk up the stone steps of the fort. It is more or less like a leisure walk in the midst of lush greenery. And during monsoon, the fort looks surreal as it gets covered by fog and mist.

Another one is from the village of Bhaje, which is about 5 - 6 kilometres from Malavali. From the village of Bhaje, a walk will lead you to Gaumukh Khand. This is the place where one might get confused. Take a right turn here as taking a left turn will direct you on the path of Visapur fort. After taking a left turn, keep walking until the stairs to the fort come within your sight.

How to reach Lohagad Fort .?

The best way to reach Lohagad fort is by taxi until the base point (Lohagadwadi village) and then trek all the way up to the fort. The trek is actually very simple and hardly takes any time, since there are stone steps all the way up to the top of the fort. If walking at a moderate speed, you should be able to reach the top in about 45 minutes, excluding the time taken to stop and appreciate the view on the way. Please note that there is a steady flow of water on these steps during monsoon, so look out for moss on the stones and avoid stepping on them.

Best Time to Visit Lohagad Fort .?

The best time to visit Lohagad Fort is during Monsoon season when the rains make the surroundings look fresh and verdant, while a cover of dark clouds is a big respite from the sun. The water cisterns and ponds on the top of the fort are full during this season and you can jump into them if you feel up to it! However, please note that the roads are not in good condition during monsoon and driving to the base village becomes a bit uncomfortable. Owing to heavy rainfall, the way to the top becomes quite slippery but it is really safe if you are being careful and take your time.

The best time to visit this fort is during the months of September and March, when the weather is pleasant and humidity is low. During monsoons, it becomes one of the hot tourist hotspots as it receives heavy rainfall, which in turn makes the view from the fort very spectacular. The scenic beauty of the place, cascading waterfalls and green meadows further add the required touch to the beauty of the place.

Pro Tips :

1. Make sure to wear comfortable clothes and a good pair of shoes as you will be trekking your way up to the fort.
2. Also, carry a raincoat if you are planning a trip during monsoon season. We also recommend that you carry snacks and about 2 litres of water per person since you will feel thirsty and hungry after the trek.
3. You can find a few restaurants serving local Maharashtrian food at the base of the fort.
4. Try to avoid visiting the place during weekends as it attracts a lot of crowd from Pune and Mumbai during this time.
