Mt Mitake Summit - A Trail From Tokyo !!

Mt Mitake, with altitude of 929 meters, is located to the West of Tokyo, Japan.


  • It takes around 2 to 2.5 hours from Tokyo City to reach the destination. 
  


Trip To Mt Mitake From Tokyo
  • The route is as follows, 
    • From Tokyo Otemachi Station -> Mitake Station -> Lower Cable Car Station -> Mitake Summit. 

Oku-tama Rapid
    • Every co-passengers from Mitake Station, will be having hiking and photography equipments, as Oku-tama is known for its Natural Sceneries.

  • People with good stamina and energy can prefer to climb the trail on a paved road from the Lower Cable Car Station. 
  • It is recommended to explore this transit from Lower Cable Car Station to the summit, through a cable car / funicular available. 
  • From the summit, we need to walk by foot, which leads to a Nanayo Waterfalls, Rock Garden, Ayahiro Waterfalls and the peak of Mount Otake, which is another part of the hike (1,267m).
  • It is actually a circular area / path of coverage, which takes around 1.5 to 2 Hours to complete, based on individuals pace of their walk and time spend in-between the trail.
  • Weather @Mt Mitaka usually varies < 3-5°C in day and < 5-7°C in night, compared to the Tokyo City.

Pro Tip : 

  • It's is always recommended to visit with a rain jacket / jerkin to stay warm and comfortable.
  • Even having an umbrella is suggested, as anytime there may be cloud burst with light to moderate drizzling as the area is fully green and filled with moisture. 

Travel Cost : 

  • There are frequently running train from Tokyo Otemachi Station and ticket fare will be around 1,300-2,000 per head for one way, based on the individual who opt for the cable car from Mitake Station to the Summit.

  • By Metro (3 Trains / 2 Hrs) : Otemachi Station -> Nakano -> Tachikawa + Ome ->  Mitake Station.

Mt Otake Hike :

  • Mt Otake(1,300 meters) hike will take around 4-5 Hours depending on individuals. 
  • It's a kind-off rugged trek with some steep rock climbing as well. 
  • Even Mt Fuji is clearly visible from the Mt Otake Peak, on a clear day. 
  • If you're planning for Mt Otake as well, you need to plan along with some basic hiking equipment and grip shoes as well for some rock climbing activities to complete the trail. 

Overnight Stay :

  • Shukubo, is known for its family run priest lodging since 1776, who also speak good English language as well. 
  • Shukubo offers lodging with great views from the accommodation and pleasant dinner as well. 
  • Shukubo usually serve dinner between 18:00 - 19:00. Therefore, plan accordingly to be back to the accommodation.
  • They also offer tagigyo in the morning for full filler Shinto experience. 
  • They also will guide and show us some flying squirrels at a walkable distance.
  • Accommodation with home made dinner and breakfast will costs around 7,500 ¥ per head. 

Conclusion :

 

  • Mt Mitake acts as a great location for Tokyo people to escape from extreme heat during summer.
  • Spring and Autumn are very natural and highly advised during this season.

  • Pro Tip :

    • In Winter, some of the hiking trails might be closed. Therefore plan accordingly.
    • Gloves and hats also help us to save from extreme cold during night time.
